The following individuals identify as LGBTQ and have stepped away from regularly attending church.

Sam Skidmore (gay man)

I’m currently working on my thesis project, which is analyzing feelings of belonging in the Latter-day Saint community and in the LGBTQ+ community and how those affect mental health outcomes. From what has already been studied, there are, and likely always will be, a group that does both. I was an active member and openly identified as gay for two years before I decided that I did not want to be part of the Church anymore. I was the ward mission leader and a Sunday School teacher at that time, and all of the members knew that I was gay. It wasn’t an issue.

If it helps substantiate my claim, I also didn’t leave the Church because of my sexuality. I firmly believe that it is possible to be both; it just depends on the individual’s desires and their feeling of belonging in each community.

Kathy Carlston (nonbinary lesbian)

To be honest, personally I believe that this myth is not a myth. There are parts of oneself that will be sacrificed on some level for an LGBTQ soul who is touched by [being a Latter-day Saint], whether they choose to be active in the Church, choose to [leave], or choose something in between.
